Flyaway

A flyaway happens when a drone stops responding correctly to the pilot's control input and continues flying, sometimes drifting or accelerating away, rather than landing or holding position. It is one of the more stressful situations a pilot can face, and depending on terrain and remaining battery, it can result in losing the drone entirely.

Common causes include a lost or corrupted radio link, a GPS error that sends the drone toward an incorrect return point, electrical interference near the flight controller or compass, or a misconfigured failsafe setting that does not trigger the intended response when the link drops. Loose wiring that intermittently interrupts the receiver signal can produce similar symptoms.

Reducing the risk starts with configuring and testing failsafe behavior before ever flying somewhere the drone could be lost, keeping firmware and GPS calibration up to date, and being cautious flying near sources of magnetic interference such as large metal structures. No configuration eliminates the risk entirely, so flying within sight and within a recoverable distance remains the more reliable safeguard.
